Series creator Richard Garriott could regain the rights to the Ultima role playing game franchise from Electronic Arts as early as next year, GamesRadar reported. The potential change opens the door to new projects in the long dormant series. [1]
Garriott co-founded developer Origin Systems with his brother and father before selling the studio and the Ultima intellectual property rights to Electronic Arts in 1992. He directed several entries in the fantasy role playing series and served as a producer on the massively multiplayer online role playing game Ultima Online, GamesRadar reported. [1]
Ultima is an open world fantasy role playing series that sold more than two million copies by 1997. Electronic Arts has owned the brand since acquiring Origin Systems in 1992. [3]
Electronic Arts canceled all in-development projects at Origin Systems in 1999 following a poor reception to Ultima IX: Ascension, according to GamesRadar. Garriott left the publisher shortly after those cancellations occurred. [1]
