A new documentary film will record the history and closure of video game developer BioWare, Polygon and Collider reported. The studio, known for role-playing games such as Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, was closed by publisher Electronic Arts. Polygon cited a Bloomberg report detailing the project following the shuttering of the studio. [1][9][10]
The closure led to the cancellation of the next entry in the Mass Effect series, VGC reported. According to GamesRadar, a BioWare co-founder stated that saving the fifth Mass Effect game would cost more than 200 million dollars. The same co-founder expressed a desire to reunite former team members for future projects, GamesRadar reported. [2][4][6]
Following the shutdown, merchandise releases for the franchise's annual N7 Day celebration have continued. VGC reported that Dark Horse Direct and YouTooz planned merchandise reveals for November 6, which Dark Horse confirmed were arranged before the closure. GamesRadar also reported that the official BioWare store continues to list new merchandise. [2][3][8]
Fans of the studio have launched campaigns to preserve the franchise. Eurogamer reported that Canadian fans petitioned the Canadian government to intervene and save the studio. The move followed public comments from Canadian New Democratic Party leader Avi Lewis, Eurogamer reported. [5]
