Japanese game developer and publisher Capcom plans to evolve its proprietary RE Engine into an artificial intelligence generation game engine. As reported by Eurogamer, Capcom programmer Satoshi Ishida outlined the plans on October 2, 2026, during the Capcom Open Conference RE: 2026. Nintendo Life and Eurogamer both reported that the changes are part of an ongoing overhaul initiative called the REX Project. [1][2]

According to Nintendo Life, the REX initiative aims to address game development challenges that cause lengthy production cycles, including improvements to development tools, quality assurance, and efficiency. Nintendo Life and Eurogamer noted that the original reports came via Japanese outlet GameBiz and Video Games Chronicle. Nintendo Life added that the project intends to adopt common programming languages to improve readability and comprehension for artificial intelligence systems. [1][2]

RE Engine is a proprietary video game engine created by Capcom to succeed its older MT Framework software. Development of the engine began in 2014, and it debuted in 2017 with Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. Eurogamer reported that the software has powered nearly 30 titles for the company. The engine has since been used to develop Street Fighter 6, Monster Hunter Rise, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Dragon's Dogma 2. [2][7]
