Former Xbox Chief Operating Officer Helen Chiang has publicly disputed claims that she was fired from Microsoft due to policy violations, according to reporting from Game Developer, PocketGamer.biz and VGC. Chiang addressed the speculation surrounding her sudden exit in a LinkedIn post titled Clarity is Kindness, stating that media reports were not the whole story and had presented an inaccurate picture of her departure. [1][2][3][4]

Game Developer and PocketGamer.biz reported that Chiang specifically denied allegations of leaking confidential information, engaging in misconduct, or being dismissed for policy breaches. Reports from Eurogamer had previously suggested that her departure followed a policy violation. GamesRadar also reported that Chiang expressed serious concerns over how Microsoft handled her exit, stating she did not want her departure reduced to an inaccurate story about incompetence. [1][2][4][5][8]

Chiang worked at Microsoft for 21 years after joining Xbox in 2005, VGC reported. During her tenure, she held various leadership roles, including business manager for the Xbox platform, director of Xbox Live business strategy, chief of staff at Microsoft Studios, and general manager and studio head for the Minecraft franchise over a 12 year period. She was appointed as the first chief operating officer of Xbox in July 2026 under Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. [3][11]

As FTMQ Gaming reported earlier, Chiang left Microsoft in October 2026 after serving just three months as Xbox chief operating officer. Asha Sharma confirmed the departure in an internal memo, with Xbox leaders dividing Chiang's executive responsibilities among themselves rather than appointing an immediate successor. [12][13]
