Veteran video game developer Glen Schofield announced his retirement from the games industry during the summer, GamesIndustry.biz reported. Speaking from his studio, the former developer discussed his post-retirement focus on making art, including epoxy skulls and paintings. GamesIndustry.biz and GameDev.net both published his comments on the state of high-budget AAA game development. [1][2]
Schofield explained why he does not view artificial intelligence as a useful tool for development right now, stating that a creative idea can save more money than technology. He also expressed that he is not a fan of remote work during his interview with GamesIndustry.biz. [1]
Schofield began his video game career as an artist and art director at Absolute Entertainment in the early 1990s, working on titles such as Barbie: Game Girl and Home Alone 2 in 1992. He later served as vice president and general manager at Visceral Games, co-founded Sledgehammer Games where he headed Call of Duty projects, and worked at Crystal Dynamics. Before his retirement, he founded Striking Distance Studios under publisher Krafton. [1][3][5]
During his career, Schofield created the third-person survival horror game series Dead Space. He later directed The Callisto Protocol, a survival horror game released on December 2, 2022, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Striking Distance Studios developed the title and Krafton published it. [3][4]
