Jagex Announces RuneScape 4 and Multi-Year Franchise Roadmaps at RuneFest
Developer Jagex has officially announced RuneScape 4 alongside multi-year update plans for Old School RuneScape and its survival spin-off RuneScape Dragonwilds.

Developer and publisher Jagex announced RuneScape 4 alongside multi-year roadmaps for Old School RuneScape and RuneScape Dragonwilds at RuneFest 2026. MMORPG.com and Pocket Gamer both reported that the studio laid out future plans for its main titles during the event. According to VGC, Jagex confirmed that the fourth main entry in the fantasy franchise will be powered by Unreal Engine. PC Gamer reported that RuneScape 4 originally began development as an expansion to the survival game Dragonwilds before becoming a full massively multiplayer online sequel. [1][4][5][6][7]
For the open world survival game RuneScape Dragonwilds, Jagex unveiled update plans covering the rest of 2026 and 2027, according to Nintendo Life. Nintendo Life reported that players will receive a free update called Luminance this winter as a prelude to the Blood Crystal Saga storyline launching in 2027. The upcoming content will feature monthly and quarterly updates, alongside the introduction of the Prayer skill. [2][3]
RPG Site reported that RuneFest also featured roadmaps for Old School RuneScape and a redesign for the original 25 year old game. In addition, RPG Site said an animated adaptation is on the way featuring internet personality Charlie White, who is also known as MoistCr1TiKaL. [7]
British developer Jagex is based at the Cambridge Science Park in Milton, Cambridgeshire, and is best known for operating its free to play massively multiplayer online role-playing games. Its spin-off game RuneScape Dragonwilds is set in the fantasy world continent of Ashenfall and originally launched in early access on PC for Windows on April 15, 2025. [8][9]
