Microsoft is projecting its next-generation Xbox home console to cost between 1,200 and 1,800 dollars at launch in 2028, according to a report by Fortune cited by The Verge, BigGo Finance, TechSpot, and Mezha. BigGo Finance and TechSpot both reported that Microsoft is also planning to launch an Xbox handheld gaming device a year earlier, in 2027. [1][6][7][8]
Industry reactions to the projected price point have been critical. Former Microsoft executive Mike Ybarra stated that he would not release the machine at that price, according to The Verge. GamesRadar reported that Ybarra, also a former Blizzard boss, separately said an 1,800 dollar Xbox will never sell, adding that current-generation hardware remains sufficient for most consumers. [1][2]
The potential pricing comes during broader restructuring efforts at Microsoft. GamesRadar reported that the company is undergoing a reset under chief executive Asha Sharma that includes workforce reductions. eTeknix reported that the next-gen console project, known internally as Project Helix, comes as Microsoft cuts 3,200 jobs. [2][5]
The Xbox series began as the original Xbox home video game console before Microsoft introduced the Xbox 360 in 2005, the Xbox One in 2013, and the Xbox Series X and Series S consoles in 2020. How Microsoft prices and positions its next hardware against competitors Sony and Nintendo will determine its strategy for the next console generation, GamesRadar reported. [2][9][10]
