Modders release software allowing jailbroken PS5 consoles to play PS2 discs

Modders have released a softmod tool named PS5SX2 that allows modified PlayStation 5 consoles to play original PlayStation 2 physical discs. A softmod is a method of using software to modify hardware behavior to overcome firmware restrictions. Insider Gaming, Tom's Hardware, VideoCardz.com, Kotaku, and Tbreak UAE all reported that jailbroken PS5 systems can now read and emulate PS2 discs. [1][2][4][5][6][7][8]

According to Tom's Hardware, the tool was released by a modder named Sword. Tom's Hardware reported that the software enables native PS2 disc support and provides 4K resolution upscaling on the PlayStation 5 console. [2][3]

The feature adds physical media emulation for older PlayStation titles that Sony Interactive Entertainment never officially added to the console. Tom's Hardware and VideoCardz.com noted that this native disc support fills a gap left by the manufacturer. [2][3][4]

Developers are planning to expand physical disc support to more console generations in future updates. According to Tom's Hardware and Kotaku, homebrew developers have confirmed that PlayStation 3 disc support is the next project planned for the PS5. [3][5]
