PlayStation US hardware sales fall to lowest level since 2013

PlayStation hardware sales in the United States have dropped to their lowest level since 2013, according to Push Square, TweakTown, and Polygon. Hardware sales across the industry have hit 13-year lows as average console prices reach record highs, TechPowerUp, TweakTown, and Polygon reported. [1][2][9][10]

Push Square reported that Sony console unit sales in the US are down 25 percent year-over-year for 2026. Data from industry tracking firm Circana showed that the PlayStation 5 was the only video game system to see dollar sales growth in its August report for the US market. Analyst Mat Piscatella reported that the average selling price for a PlayStation 5 in the US reached $597 this year, representing a 20 percent increase year-over-year. [1]

Sony Interactive Entertainment launched the PlayStation 5 home video game console in November 2020 as part of the ninth generation of gaming hardware. The system succeeded the PlayStation 4, which had previously replaced the PlayStation 3. [13]

As FTMQ Gaming reported earlier, retailers have also raised prices for secondary market hardware. GameStop and other retailers listed used PlayStation 5 Pro consoles for up to $1,499.99, which is 66 percent above the manufacturer suggested retail price, amid inventory shortages. [15]
