Developer and publisher Jagex has cancelled RuneScape Reignited less than two weeks after revealing the project. Rock Paper Shotgun, GamesRadar, PC Gamer and IGN all reported that the decision was announced on 15 October 2026. Creative director Mod Ryan released the statement through an official YouTube video and blog post, explaining that the studio was responding directly to player feedback after acknowledging it had missed the mark. RuneScape Reignited was planned as a new game mode and character type incubating within RuneScape 3, according to GamesRadar and Rock Paper Shotgun. The project was intended to launch new worlds featuring exclusive, fresh characters and a separate economy. IGN and GamesRadar reported that the mode was designed to attract new players and give both existing and returning players a fresh start. [1][2][4]

The cancellation came after strong pushback from the player community. GamesRadar noted that players feared a repeat of the controversial Evolution of Combat update from the game's history. Jagex announced the cancellation shortly after its original reveal earlier in October, alongside the announcement of a fourth version of the game, currently referred to as RuneScape 4. [1][2][3]

RuneScape is a fantasy massively multiplayer online role-playing game originally released in January 2001. Set in the medieval world of Gielinor, the game features a classless progression system with open-ended activities such as questing, combat and skill training. [5][6]

Mod Ryan stated that the developer remains committed to growing the audience without repeating past mistakes. According to GamesRadar, the studio is continuing with its broader plans for the game leading into December. [1][2]
